PokerStars recently uncovered a bug in their SNG Rematch functionality.   When accepting a rematch it would always allow the rematch regardless if you had enough funds for it or not.

This bug was discovered and exploited by several players, one of which is documented below.   As you can see the player nugloker was a SNG player at the $11 and $22 type level, suddenly he spiraled up the levels and played the $5500 HU SNGs with 100% success rate.  He played the games against a friend or an alter-ego called takeittogo to as quickly as possible spiral up the bankroll with win after win.  Basically takeittogo ditched each HU game but then selected rematch each time (despite not having funds), this netted nugloker $5000 profit each game out of literally thin air.  Or more perhaps more accurately, out of the PokerStars coffers.

nugloker

nugloker

Needless to say PokerStars has now closed out the bug (booo, I hear you say). Here is the official response from their security department:

“Pokerstars became aware of a system glitch which allowed users to accept a rematch in heads-up SNGs despite having insufficient funds in their account. Once we became aware of this we suspended the rematch feature.

We have carefully reviewed each account which played in a SNG where the glitch occurred, and have taken action as appropriate in each case. We did not simply take action against everyone who received a financial gain as a result of this glitch. We carefully investigated each instance, and suspended player accounts only in cases where there was a clear violation of PokerStars’ terms and conditions, such as collusion or chip dumping to exploit this glitch.

During the course of our investigation we initially suspended a small number of accounts, however further investigations proved that some of the accounts in question did not breach our terms and conditions. Those accounts have been re-instated, and we regret any inconvenience caused by the temporary suspension.

It should be noted that only a very small number of accounts have been suspended for abusing this glitch for their financial gain. The majority of affected players have aided us in resolving this problem in a timely manner, and we would like to thank them for their continued support and custom.

We will reactivate the rematch feature as soon as possible, but we’re not sure at this point when that will be. We apologise for any inconvenience that this issue may have caused to our valued customers, and thank those who helped to bring the issue to our attention.”

Battle of the World Record Fields - PokerStars and Full Tilt go to war

PokerStars broke the world record on 28th Dec 2008, with a field of 35,000 players for a $11 buy-in event.  Stan34powa won that event.

Now things are really heating up with both PokerStars and Full Tilt looking to break that record.

On Sun July 19th at 15:05 ET Full Tilt have a $5 tourney which they have added $250K to.  This is an official world record attempt, and a part of their 5th year birthday celebrations.

Not to be outdone though, PokerStars have loaded up a $1 tourney on the same day (starting at 14:10 ET) to no doubt try to crush the Full tilt record attempt, not even letting Full Tilt hold it for any length of time by starting their tournament earlier.

In preparation for the attempt Pokerstars did a $1000 Freeroll on 16th July 2009, which got 61,259 entrants, and was won by azeitegalo. Things dont seem to bode well for Full Tilt’s successes.

Remember Sunday 19th July is the day, good luck

Brock “t soprano” Parker has managed to win two WSOP bracelets in a matter of days.  He first won Event 14, and then literally entered Event 19 as soon as his heads-up battle was complete, and then went on to win that one as well.   In a place where bracelets are like literally rare-gems which many poker players would be lucky to get 1 of in their lifetime, Brock managed to get two of them within under a week.

Brock Parker is a well known and respected online player, who plays under the alias ID of “t soprano” on PokerStars.   He has got around $1.5 million in winnings from the site, from 4731 tournaments, converting $364,738 of that to profit at an ROI of 33%.   Some of his poker friends have won bracelets before, but not to be outdone, Brock now has two of them.

KipsterDK won the PokerStars Sunday Million for the second time in just over a year this weekend just gone.  An amazing achievement only done by a couple of players, Legato being one other.

He first won the event back in 27th April 2008 where there was a 5-way chop and he went on to win.  The prize money he won that time was $149,861

Then fast forward 1 year and there were 7177 players entered into the PokerStars Sunday Million this week with KipsterDK from Copenhagen in Denmark eventually emerging as the winner, again!

1st: KipsterDK ($206,834.57)
2nd: philipoo ($174,580.93)
3rd: praetoriancz ($129,139.50)
4th: bbs99 ($79,500.00)
5th: Pokermon1960 ($61,500.00)
6th: guideguy ($46,500.00)
7th: TUGA_ACE ($32,250.00)
8th: Poker Man ($18,000.00)
9th: aakkari ($11,625.00)

There was a 3-way chop this time, with KipsterDK and philipoo getting near even amounts and praetoriancz getting 9K more than the official 3rd place amount.   KipsterDK then went on to take down the event and the extra 30K left on the table.

Winning this event twice is a truely remarkable feat.  Congrats to Kipster for some epic pwnage.

A notable finish also for PokerStars Pro aakkari as well, who final tabled, finishing in 9th

At a buy-in of $10,300 this one wasnt for the faint hearted.  But 502 players coughed it up, and after 2 days of intense poker j.thaddeus emerged the winner.    The deep structure of this event (30 min blinds, 10,000 starting stack) was still present at the final table with several players sat at least 100 blinds deep.

As the action hotted up, certainly players (in particular PearlJammer) looked in no hurry to bust out, taken full advantage of the deepness of the stacks.

j.thaddeus started to gain a lot of momentum at about 5 players out, and gradually became a very dominant chip leader of the table.   He kept up the pressure constantly with a very high frequency of pre-flop raises and re-raises, and kept on chipping away at his opponents.

MazeOrBowie pushed back at him perhaps a little too hard in the following hand, pushing around 40 BBs in with pocket sevens

PokerStars Remove SNG results from display unless you entered tournament

Sign the Petition against this

There has long been a running battle between poker results databases (such as Pokerdb, OPR, and Sharkscope) and the site PokerStars.  From Stars’ perspective they were concerned that if players knew they were losing money they’d stop playing.  To guard against this perceived potential rake loss they have said that only winnings could be displayed by the database sites, but not P&L related data.  Sites like OPR and Sharkscope were reluctant to comply, as it was not good for their general business models or service offered if the stats were not very comprehensive.

Stars have tried a few things to encourage an acceptable level of compliance and also made some threatening noises before about the consequences of not doing so, but seemingly none of this has had much joy in getting the level of compliance they desired.

When the pokerdb was sold to Bluff Magazine they complied with all Stars requests regarding an actual opt in requirement.  This basically involved full stats only being made available to people who sent a small nominal amount to Stars to prove they were happy with their results being displayed.

However OPR and Sharkscope are independantly run, and dont have anyone directly to answer to.   They are both run by technically competant indviduals with excellent programming skills relating to datamining.

Although PokerStars could potentially have a scan running when their software was actually open to check for the use of Sharkscope, once the client was closed, it would be highly illegal for them to continue to run scans on someones PC.  So they cant actually do a lot to stop the players using the tools completely.

However they have now decided to adopt an entirely different approach.  Not requesting compliance, not requiring opt ins, and not scans, but actually cutting off the results of completed SNGs themselves.   Yes actually removing them from sight.  You can no longer see the result of a 90-seater and 180-seater SNG, unless you actually played in it.

This could be disatrous for OPR and Sharkscope and all the many online players who use them, as the general fear could easily be that the policy could be rolled out by PokerStars to other SNGs, or even MTTs.

Here is a screenshot of the result removed:

 Stars Remove Results

“Additional tournament information is available to the tournament participants only” (Applies to both running tournaments and completed tournaments)

Thankfully the result can still actually be requested via email:

PokerStars Tournament #153061183, No Limit Hold’em
Buy-In: $20.00/$2.00
180 players
Total Prize Pool: $3600.00
Tournament started 2009/04/03 17:23:57 ET
Tournament finished 2009/04/03 21:46:44 ET
  1: eraelk (Doral), $1080.00 (30%)
  2: TurboTurk (Cardiff), $720.00 (20%)
  3: ChrisWPK (Hamilton), $428.40 (11.90%)
  4: toomany7s (Avon Lake), $288.00 (8%)
  5: 26aug76 (hk), $234.00 (6.50%)
  6: GOD UR UGLY (Austin), $180.00 (5%)
  7: Dodosuave (Voisins le BX), $126.00 (3.50%)
  8: lockey369 (calgary), $93.60 (2.60%)
  9: Zteif9 (Högsby), $61.20 (1.70%)

But it can safely be assumed that PokerStars will simply impose a limit of how many tournament result requests can be made per user, thus cutting off the possibility of datamining from this source.

It would be tragic for all online pros, semi pros, serious amateurs, and stakers if databases like this get lost completely, so it looks like a battle is well and truely on.    OPR are already encouraging players to email PokerStars to try to prevent the expansion of this policy to more tournaments.
