Poker Strategy
Poker Tips, Advice and Strategy
Poker is a quick game to learn the basics, but it can take many years to really learn how to approach the game, and to master the strategy. The most intelligent of aspiring poker players look to learn from both the mistakes and the success of others. Only if you are prepared to to do this will you save yourself a lot of time on the learning curve.
One of the first lessons of poker is to learn to be selectively patient, and selectively aggressive. At times you need to be able to sit for hours with barely playing a hand, at other times you need to be trampling over the whole table and playing almost every hand. Learning this balance isnt easy, but rest assured there is a time and a place for everything.
Table Image is important, but perhaps more important are the tendancies, confidence, and playing style of the people at your table. If they are playing way above their level it is likely you will be able to get them to fold in a lot of certain situations. Can you see them tightening up? Does it look like they are scared of not making it to the money?
Bankroll Management is absolutely crucial. Poker has a lot of variance, and really you need to always play a low percentage of your bankroll on every occassion you play. If you dont, you will learn the hard way as you WILL blow your entire bankroll on several occasions. For tournaments dont play anything which you dont have 100 buy-ins for (eg to play a $100 tournament you should have $10,000 bankroll). In cash games, dont buy-in to a cash table unless you have the bankroll to buy-in at that level at least 20 times over. Dont learn the hard way, just do it.
