Details of poker variant Omaha



Omaha is a poker variant that community card based, in a very similar way to holdem. The key difference is that with Omaha you get four hole cards rather than two.

Each player in the hand in Omaha gets dealt 4 cards. Based on this cards there are the standard poker betting decisions of fold, check, call, bet, or raise. Hand with high pocket pairs and with suited pair are strong starting hands in a similar way to holdem.

After this initial betting round a flop of 3 cards is dealt face up in the center of the table. The players left in the game then have another round of betting taking into account the flop

As in holdem there is then a turn card, a round of betting, a river card, and then a final round of betting.

A key factor in Omaha is how the winning hand is determined. The hand ranks are exactly the same in Omaha as they are in holdem, but with 1 crucial difference. Out of the 4 hole card you must play exactly 2 cards. You do not have a choice to play None, 1, 3, or 4. You must play exactly two. This may take a little getting used to as you embark on learning and playing the game of Omaha, but you'll soon pick it up. Some of the scenarios that this presents are things like, in Omaha if there are 4 cards of a suit face up in the middle (community cards) and you have just 1 card of that suit in your hole cards, you will NOT have a flush. Be careful when you start off, but Omaha is a great game. There is often loads of action and big pots.
